Botswana’s Assistant Education and Skills Development Minister Keletso Rakhudu has decried rampant drug abuse in schools, saying the challenge had become the second largest problem in the country after HIV and AIDS.According to the state-run Daily News, Rakhudu said students at secondary schools and tertiary institutions were involved in drug abuse, a development that forced his ministry at one point to nearly introduce sniffer dogs in schools to search for drugs in student bags.
“However, he said government would re-consider such a decision because of the increasing numbers of students involved,” the paper said.
The minister said the problem was exacerbated by some irresponsible adults who sold drugs to the students and appealed to parents to ensure their children do not get involved with drugs.
